Appledore
IV is operated as part of the non-profit Bay City based, Bay Sail. The
mission of Bay Sail is to foster environmental stewardship of the Saginaw
Bay Watershed and the Great Lakes ecosystem. Bay Sail also works to increase personal and
professional opportunities for learners of all ages through
comprehensive, hands-on educational and skill-building programs under
sail.
Bay Sail was established in 1997 for the purpose
of owning and operating the Schooner Appledore. The boat was purchased
with funds with grants from Dow Chemical Company, General Motors Powertrain and
other local foundations and
organizations.
Appledore IV is a topsail schooner,
85 feet overall, 65 feet on deck, and 53 feet at the water line. Her
beam is 18 feet 10 inches, and she draws 9 feet 6 inches of water.
She carries 3500 square feet of sail, divided among seven sails:
mainsail, foresail, staysail, jib, flying jib, topsail and fisherman.
Her displacement is 72 tons, and she
has an auxiliary diesel engine, made by Ford, delivering 135 horsepower
from 6 cylinders. She's made of steel for her hull and lowers, with
spars made of fir.
